Saturday, April 261:00—2:15 PMOak Grove Cemetery 46 Jones Rd, Falmouth, MA, 02540

When Abraham Lincoln sent out a call to arms Falmouth men bravely responded, reporting in large numbers to the Union army and navy. Many of these Veterans are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery. Come hear the compelling stories of a select few as the Historic Oak Grove Cemetery presents Bravery and Honor: Falmouth Soldiers & Sailors of the Civil War - A Walking Tour.
This approximately 75-minute event is free and open to the public and will be held rain or shine at the Oak Grove Cemetery located at 46 Jones Road in Falmouth. We will meet inside the chapel at the cemetery, which is handicap accessible. If the weather is inclement, we will stay inside the chapel, otherwise, plan on an easy stroll in the park-like setting. The tour will stop by personal graves and the renovated Grand Army of the Republic plot - one of the few examples in Massachusetts of this early type of memorial. Light refreshments will be served and registration is required.
Oak Grove Cemetery is the final resting place for some 5,000 souls, many of local, regional and national renown - including Katharine Lee Bates who is the author of "America the Beautiful". Approximately 500 are Veterans, which is the greatest number of Veterans in any Cape cemetery aside from the National Cemetery in Bourne. Designed in the Mount Auburn Style, Oak Grove is rich in New England history and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This non-denominational cemetery encompasses 22 acres. It is managed by the Oak Grove Cemetery Association of Falmouth and its Board of Directors is composed of active members whose priority is to preserve the character of Oak Grove Cemetery for future generations.
Registration for this event has now closed.
